Mew - Frengers
Mew is a very talented band from Denmark and have been around since 1994 and are still together. They have a very unique sound to them vocally and instrumentally. They're lyrics are very interesting and they usually have a dark undertone to their songs. Jonas Bjerre have a soft, mesmerizing voice that lulls the listener into a trance-like state. He is the biggest reason I've been listening to this band for so long.
Frengers, their 3rd LP, is a very relaxing album. It starts out very strong with "Am I Wry? No" and "156" (which I consider to be the most addicting songs on the album," there is a very sad vibe to these songs lyrically and instrumentally which works very well with the airy vocals of Jonas. After the first three songs, they really slow down the tempo, even more than it already is, with "Symmetry" and "Behind the Drapes". These songs were absolutely beautiful instrumentally and vocally. It was a great change of pace. The next song, "Her Voice is Beyond Her Years," was a very different sound, even for them, considering they had a female singer in the mix. This was a wonderful addition to the song and to the album, a slight mix in what is going on can be very refreshing. Two songs later, "She Came Home for Christmas," is a very slow, intimate song, which was an incredible add to this album. You can really sense this emotional attachment to the person this is about in this song, which is a beautiful vibe to get in a song, you know they're doing something right if you can get that feeling in a song. "Shespider" was really a song that I was not very crazy about, I really think it is the only flaw on this album. I was not crazy about the abrupt change of tempo in this song. It really came out of nowhere and did not feel necessary at all. This is the only song where I was not crazy about his lyrics all the way through. Something sounded off on his lyrics when he got louder and it really didn't do it for me. "Comforting sounds really made up for "Shespider," a very relaxed feel to end the album is always perfect. The song is a little drawn out, but I believe that it worked much better that way.
Overall, I think this was a fantastic album, there was one blemish, but the other addicting songs around the album made up for it. I give this album a 10/10. This is a must listen to album if you have Spotify or something like that. Any music lover should really enjoy this album.
